Whether you enjoy billfishing or merely have a fondness for such majestic aquatic animals, these elegant fish with their sail-shaped dorsal fins will allow you and your guests to enjoy the marvels of the ocean. In addition to that, we have a plethora of other sea life pool mosaics if you prefer something else. What’s a Sailfish? Belonging to the genus Istiophorus of billfish, sailfish are by far the fastest fish swimming around in the oceans of the world, reportedly reaching speeds of 68 miles per hour. To date, they hold the fastest speed record of any marine animal on Earth. To put that in perspective, some performance cruiser boats or yachts have a top speed of 50 miles per hour. That means, short of a high-performance speed boat, a healthy sailfish would have no problem outmaneuvering the average fishing boat. This is what makes the sailfish one of the pinnacles of offshore game fishing; their substantial size, strength, and intrepid demeanor make sailfish the jewel of trophy fishers. The sailfish gets its name from its characteristic dorsal fin called a “sail.” Its sail typically stretches the entire length of the fish’s back, giving it the appearance of speed and agility it’s known for. They’re predominantly gray to blue in color and have an elongated bill, quite similar to marlins and the swordfish. It’s this bill that places sailfish in the “billfish” category among sport fishermen. Sailfish Left This sailfish choice is among our more realistic-looking mosaics. Facing to the left (hence the name), it looks as if it’s in mid-air flight—jumping high out of the water as they commonly do. Sailfish Left mosaics are available in 33″ x 23″ or 60″ x 42″ sizes and are offered with or without a shadow. Islander Sailfish This hand-glazed ceramic sailfish mosaic is available in 49″ x 44″ size and features 1/4 inch thick tiles. Similar to the one above, it’s jumping in mid-air out of the water to the left side. The biggest difference between the two, nonetheless, is that this mosaic is reminiscent of a tribal pattern. Fun Sailfish For a more lighthearted tone, the Fun Sailfish pool mosaic is more cartoonish. It’s available in 24″ x 22″, 36″ x 32″, 48″ x 42″, and 60″ x 53″ sizes. This Blue Water Pool Mosaics mosaic consists of 1/4 inch hand-glazed ceramic. What’s a Marlin? To the untrained eye, one may mistake a marlin for a swordfish. However, while swordfish have dorsal fins that look more like a shark’s, marlins have a single dorsal fin running along their back, ending in a short yet soft-looking ridge. Some describe the marlin’s dorsal fin as looking like a long feather. There are approximately 10 different species of marlin, all of which belong to the Istiophoridae family. Like the sailfish, it is a billfish and got its common name from its similarity to a sailor’s marlinespike. Marlins are also very fast swimmers, giving the sailfish a pretty good run for its money with a near top speed of 68 miles per hour, albeit in relatively short bursts. Marlin (Realistic) This realistic marlin pool mosaic is available in 80″ x 54″ and 92″ x 56″ (with shadow) sizes. It consists of 1/4 inch hand-glazed ceramic tile. Tribal Marlin Our contemporary swimming pool mosaics are styled after two old-world art forms: ancient Polynesian tribal art and an Italian art style from the Baroque period of the 1700s. The use of the word “contemporary” refers to our modern application of these two art styles. This Custom Mosaics mosaic consists of 3/8-inch screen printed porcelain and is available in 60″ x 49″ size. You can choose from three colors: Emperador (a beautiful dark brown color), black, and blue. Blue Marlin This is a Blue Water Pool Mosaics piece composed of 1/4 inch hand-glazed ceramic. Though not listed as such, it resembles tribal art. It is available in four sizes, ranging from 36″ x 29″ to 72″ x 58″. Ready to reel a little fun into the ambiance of your space?
